Biological Environment

Intertidal (North):

Zone 1: periwinkles (Nodilittorina unifasciata) and patches of barnacles (Chamaesipho columna).

Zone 2: barnacles (Tesseropora rosea) and a variety of gastropod species.

Zone 3: tubeworms (Galeolaria caespitosa), sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca), coralline algae (Corallina officinalis) and a variety of gastropod species.

Intertidal (South):

Zone 1: alga Porphyra sp and periwinkles (Nodilittorina unifasciata).

Zone 2: barnacles (T. rosea) and a variety of gastropod species.

Zone 3: tubeworms (Galeolaria caespitosa), sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) and coralline algae (Corallina officinalis).

Subtidal:

Ecklonia (Kelp) Forest, Mixed (Foliose algae, filamentous algae and sessile invertebrates) Reef and Barrens (areas of rock associated with encrusting Corallinaceae algae and the urchin Centrostephanus rodgersii). The Ecklonia forest habitat consisted mostly of brown algae (Ecklonia and Sargassum) with a secondary cover of Corallinaceae algae and Amphiroa. Invertebrate fauna included urchins (Centrostephanus rodgersii and Heliocidaris erythrogramma), turbinid gastropods and ascidians. The deep Mixed Reef habitat at Red Point occurred in 16-20m water depth and was characterized by a diverse fauna of erect sponges. The primary algal cover was Zonaria with a secondary cover of Corallinaceae algae and Pterocladia.
